México:Public condemnation of murder of Mariano Abarca
CENSAT AGUA VIVA - Amigos de la Tierra Colombia - Dec 02, 2009We strongly reject the murder of fellow activist Mariano Abarca, for years leader of the struggle against the mining project of Canadian company Blackfire and member of the Mexican Network of People Affected by Mining (REMA) / Chiapas.
He was murdered on November 29th by a group of unknown men on motorcycles. This is evidence of the persecution and repression suffered daily by the popular movement, which is courageously resisting extractive transnational corporations. These corporations in addition to obtaining profits, are causing irreparable environmental and social disasters.
Mariano Abarca Roblero held a constant struggle against the mining company in Chicomuselo municipality, where Blackfire is exploiting barite, gold and antimony through 10 mining concessions. Since June, Mariano was protesting with other members of REMA, demanding the exit of the transnational corporation.
Mariano Abarca´s death is now also part of the debt the North and its companies have with the South that keeps resisting!
Solidarity to his family and the Mexican people.
