Dear Ambassador,
Friends of the Earth Europe condemns the illegal expulsion of the Honduran President and expresses its solidarity with the democratic forces and the people of Honduras, as well as with Friends of the Earth Honduras / Movimiento Madre Tierra.
Friends of the Earth Europe is deeply worried about the current situation in the Republic of Honduras and expresses its unreserved condemnation for the illegal detention and expulsion of the constitutional president, Manuel Zelaya, by the armed forces. We demand the restoration of the Honduran president and the unconditional respect for democracy.
We demand that social peace be re-established in Honduras and call for respect for the elected authorities. The Honduran Army should respect the physical integrity of the country’s social movements and organizations, and of the demonstrators who are defending the institutional order and the right to a national consultation of public opinion on possible constitutional reforms.
We report that the activists of the grassroots movements and organizations of Honduras are suffering persecution and repression by the forces promoting the coup, which should lead to the immediate action of human rights organizations to defend the safety and lives of people in Honduras.
We call on the entire international community to demand the return of the democratically elected president.
Best regards.
